Introduction

Phoenix Badminton Club was founded in 1973 and began playing in the sports hall at John of Gaunt school in Trowbridge Wiltshire. The club has stayed at the school ever since making full use of the 5-court sports hall. Throughout the clubs existence it has not only supported the Mid-Wilts badminton league but also the near-by Bath league and has entered teams in both leagues for many years. In the early eighties the club had a thriving junior section who won the junior league trophy for three consecutive years. However the junior league folded and was not resurrected until recently. In its first season, 1998, the new junior section at the club were again successful. The present club has a thriving senior section playing in both the Mid-wilts and the Bath league entering 7 teams in mixed, mens and ladies doubles. It also enters 2 junior teams in the junior league.

The clubs objective in its constitution is '…to provide facilities for the playing of competitive badminton'. The club endeavours to do this and has succeeded in this objective. The re-opening of a junior section in 1994 has laid an excellent foundation for the future and some those juniors who started in 1994 are now established in the senior teams.

Currently the junior section has 16 members and the senior section 30.

A small committee consisting of a chairman, treasurer, secretary, fixture secretary and 1 ordinary member runs the club. Visitors are welcome to come to the club, which plays on a Tuesday night throughout the period of September and March inclusive from 7.00pm to 10.00pm, with match nights and junior coaching on Fridays over the same period. During the summer months junior coaching and club nights continue from late April to mid July from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
